Why Sixteen Years Ago, It Was Sixteen Years Ago (In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...)

This is what happens when I piss off his soldiers. #ICON30 #StarWars

As I write this, it is May 25th, the real Star Wars Day. Long before any celebration took place on an arbitrary date that simply sounds like the word “Force”, fans of Star Wars celebrated the movies on the 25th of May as it is the anniversary of the release of the first movie in 1977 now titled, Episode IV: A New Hope. May 25th is also the anniversary of the release of the third movie, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi which had been released 32 years ago in 1983. What does this all mean and what is this all “16 years" all about? Well, 16 years is the amount of time we Star Wars fans had to wait and endure after the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983 for the next big screen adventure. It seemed like a lifetime back then. George Lucas had concluded the story with Return of the Jedi, putting to rest any notion of any following films after Return of Jedi, but there would always be the first three prequels, Episodes I-III which may be made at some undetermined date in the future. Lucas wanted to go off and explore other projects outside of the Star Wars universe after Jedi which was understandable for him. Though eventually he would return to a galaxy far, far away…

Amazing Grace: Leonard Nimoy 1931-2015

Happy 80th Birthday, Leonard Nimoy of #StarTrek! These photos I took 25 years ago of him in NYC

The anxiously anticipated day started off very exciting. I was with my good friend, Chase Graff, though at that time he went by the name Charlie and we were sitting on a sidewalk patiently waiting on this early June day. It was the fourth of June thirty-three years ago… the year was 1982. We were first in line for the long awaited sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In hindsight, it is hard to believe that it was less than three years that had passed since the original Star Trek movie then. We were there before the theater opened  for business that day waiting. When the puzzled manager came to the theater, he was surprised to find us there so early waiting. He asked what we were waiting for and we jokingly said Das Boot, which was the other film playing at this cinema at that time. Long waits didn’t bother us because we were able to talk about everything under the sun. Though on this day, I imagined the topic was mostly on Star Trek perhaps and the rumors surrounding this particular movie. There was this talk that the character Spock would die in this movie. This couldn’t be so, we thought. Spock was our favorite character, after all. What would Star Trek be without Mr. Spock?

Star Wars: The Fork Awakens

Star Wars

It’s no secret that I have been a huge fan of Star Wars since it was released in 1977. It could even be argued that I was fan before it was even released (Sorry, Stephen Colbert, you’re not alone or the first), as I was following the production and its impending release in science fiction genre media. It’s without exaggeration that it had a tremendous impact on this then eleven year-old when it was released and it continued on. This post isn’t focusing on that so I won’t go into all the details only to say even though I was deeply into the mythology and themes of the films, it didn’t prevent me from having a life outside of it.

35 Years Ago, The Human Adventure Continued on the Big Screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

It was 35 years ago today on a chilly night not unlike tonight (well, perhaps not as cold) when Star Trek: The Motion Picture opened in the theaters in the U.S. I remember vividly going to see it for the first time. After watching Star Trek all my life on television, we were finally seeing it on the big screen. Big it was, as it captured the scale and majesty of the refitted Enterprise and more like television never could at that time.

May the 4th Sunday of May Be With You or Happy Star Wars Day on May 25th!

Real Star Wars Day

First off, everyday is Star Wars day, just as everyday is Doctor Who day for me. There doesn’t need to a special day to celebrate either series. That said, every 23rd of November I try to watch episode 1 of ‘An Unearthly Child’ to celebrate the anniversary of Doctor Who and for almost 40 years, every 25th of May has always been STAR WARS DAY! Yes, it is the anniversary of the first release of the first Star Wars movie back in 1977 as well as the release of the final episode of the Star Wars saga completing the Skywalker storyline (I’m not including in the newly contrived upcoming Disney movies), Return of the Jedi in 1983.

Let the Wookiee Win! Chewie Gets His Own Movie

Peter Mayhew, the actor who plays Chewbacca (Chewie) in the Star Wars saga will be getting his own movie reports Hollywood Reporter. It's not a movie taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but rather one taking place some 36 or so years ago around the making of the original Star Wars film (A New Hope) released in 1977.

Why May 25th is Star Wars Day. Celebrating 35 Years of the Force [VIDEO]

It feels like it was just the other day I was writing about the 32nd anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back because it was just the other day (it was Monday, May 21st). Though there wouldn't had been a Star Wars - Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, if there wasn't for Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope, or as we knew the film back in 1977, simply "Star Wars."

Has it really been 35 years? Indeed it has though it is difficult to swallow at times. I am an original Star Wars fan. I was 11 when the film opened and it changed my life. I had always been a science fiction fan, but I knew from the very first frames of this movie that this was going to be a game-changer. Seeing that Imperial Stardestroyer fly overhead, lasers shooting over the screen, explosions that rattled the seats next to me in the theaters, I hadn't seen or experienced anything like this before that time.

Why is May 25th the real "Star Wars Day"? The date actually has significance. It was the day the film opened in 1977. It didn't have the same fanfare as the opening of the subsequent movies in the saga, and far fewer screens which it could had been seen on back then. Though it was a different time then. Sure, a couple years before we had Jaws which may had brought in the tradition of "summer blockbusters" in the movie business, but it was Star Wars that really cemented it in.

32 Years Strike Back! Happy Anniversary to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

32yearsStrikesBack

It is unimaginable that it has been so long ago. It was 32 years ago on May 21, 1980 that I found myself standing in a long line to see the first sequel in the Star Wars saga, The Empire Strikes Back. At the time, 3 years seemed like a long wait after the original Star Wars film, it's difficult to think that it's been 35 years now since the opening of that movie (more on that later this week).

In the video below I recall some distant memories from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… well, 32 years ago at least in a movie theater. What were you doing 32 years ago?

Final Cut Pro X

Apple has released Final Cut Pro X to the Mac App Store (store link: Final Cut Pro - Apple) today. The long awaited upgrade for this professional movie editor software has been rewritten from the ground up. The big news when it was announced a few months ago was that it would be coming to the Mac App Store with a new price of only $299 (previously FCP itself was $999). Other companion apps that had been included in Final Cut Pro Studio suite such as Motion - Apple and Compressor - Apple are sold separately also in the Mac Store for $49 each. It doesn't look like Soundtrack Pro has made the cut though, at least not yet.

The GetGlue iPhone App Gets a Make Over and More

GetGlue

The GetGlue app (from AdaptiveBlue) for iPhone and iPod touch has been updated and with it, it has a newly enhanced user interface and more. (See my previous article, Get Glued on GetGlue for more details on GetGlue). In addition to the user interface refresh, which is a quite welcomed refresh, it also now allows you to check into "sports" in addition to the previous categories already available such as television, movies, books, music, wine, etc. Also it now offers Foursquare location check-in integration as well (unfortunately, Gowalla is not also offered as an option as well).
